About Us

In 1986, the chairperson of the Kentucky Literacy
Commission said, “We’re one of the few countries that has a free public education
system, and we have always believed ourselves to be the most literate
country in the world. We’re
not.” It was true then and,
unfortunately, it is still true today.
Over twenty-five years ago, a small group of
dedicated women responded to this challenge and launched a war on
illiteracy in Clark
County, Kentucky. Their
assets consisted of a $300 donation and a fiery desire to improve the lives
of their fellow citizens.
From the first volunteers who gave their time and
their hearts to sit with another individual and help him/her learn to read,
the battle is now waged not only on improving reading skills, but also on
several other fronts as well. The
army itself has also expanded from all volunteers to a certified teaching
staff and a professional administrator; from catch-as-catch-can meetings
between tutor and student to a permanent location complete with text books,
classrooms and a computer lab; from a pat on the back for a job
accomplished to a formal cap and gown ceremony attended by proud families;
from that $300 gift to additional support from local, state, and federal
governments.
Some things, however, do not change. We are still guided and supported by a
board of directors. Volunteer tutors
are still needed.
